Calais la plage, with the sea on the horizon, from canal to tidal flats, between fileds and marshland.
On leaving the centre of Calais to go west, either by the coast road or an inland route, the landscape climbs up to a range of hills, with a few welcoming villages dotted about. It’s ideal walking country. This is the great Two Caps site, classified as a “Grand Site de France” (equivalent of a National Park), with breathtaking panoramic views from the cliffs of Cap Blanc-Nez (White-Nose Head). In the east there is a “polder” zone, consisting of territory reclaimed from the sea and characterised by the “wateringues” - man-made drainage channels for evacuating water towards the sea and drying out the land. To the south, a more hilly, green world, between meadows, hills and marshes. Obviously, in such an environment, hiking trails provide an alternative to seaside walks.
